Ireland has higher labour and operating costs than many mainland European nations. But our accommodation is excellent, food is fresh and largely local, and travel between rural areas adds logistical cost. But this isn’t the whole picture. Visitors rate Ireland as excellent value because of:

Tipping in Ireland – how it works
An interesting and common question – especially with our guests coming from countries with quite varying tipping cultures. Yes, we’ve know of some very popular guide book authors that say it’s not expected, but the reality is different. Here’s how tipping actually operates in Ireland.
🍽️Restaurants and Gastro Pubs – the normal is 10-12.5%. But – check your menu and bill before paying – if there’s a service charge included then no need to add to that.
🚕Taxis – Simply round it up. For example, if your fare comes to €17.50, the driver will be more than happy if told to keep the change of a €20.
🍺Bars – your barman/woman doesn’t expect to be tipped. But if you are getting table service then give some change to your server. In some popular pubs there may be a tips jar on the counter. If you’ve been there for a while it can be nice to give them a few bucks at the end of the night in the Irish way, saying ‘have one for yourself’.
🎻Musicians – the vast majority of music sessions in the pubs of Ireland have no cover charge. You may see a tips jar or CDs for sale in front of the musicians. Buying a CD will benefit them and you’ll be able to relive those musical moments later.
👩🏼🏫Tour Guides – again, entirely at your own discretion. The industry standard for a driver-guide for multi-day tours is €10-€15 per person per day.
Whilst these are the main areas that we are asked about, one other thing to note is that the staff will receive your gratuity – it’s the law in Ireland that they must be distributed fairly and transparently. You also may not see a percentage option on a card machine like you will in the US. In that case you simply add the amount you want to tip to the payment – e.g., my food bill is €54 and I’ve had good service. I’ll simply ask the cashier to round it up to €60.
